North Carolina Insurance Overview
North Carolina (NC) requires all drivers to carry minimum liability insurance. Non-owner car insurance is available for residents who don't own a vehicle but still need to maintain coverage, whether for SR-22 requirements, rental car usage, or occasional driving.
Minimum Liability Coverage: 50/100/50$50,000 bodily injury per person / $100,000 per accident / $50,000 property damage. Minimums raised to 50/100/50 effective July 1, 2025 under NC Session Law 2023-133.
Uninsured Motorist: Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is mandatory and must match or exceed the 50/100/50 liability minimums for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.
Notes: North Carolina does NOT use the SR-22 filing form. Proof of financial responsibility is handled via Form DL-123 (a liability-policy certificate) submitted directly to the NC DMV by the insurer.
